HUNTSVILLE
– The University of North Alabama
men’s basketball team picked up a huge win
in Gulf South Conference play Saturday
evening, knocking off in-state rival
Alabama-Huntsville 92-88 on the road.
Milton Nance scored a game-high 35 points as
the Lions hit 49.2 percent of their shots on
the night and out-rebounded the Chargers
41-35.
UNA used a 25-9 run late in the first half
to claim a 38-47 lead. The Chargers hit two
free throws in the final minute to make the
score 47- 40 at intermission.
The Lions were able to keep the lead the
entire second half, but UAH made it
interesting. A layup by the Chargers’ Kael
Coleman made the score 64-63 with 9:41
remaining, but UAH could never get over the
hump.
Jumpers by Nance, Thomas Morris and two free
throws by Jerrell Vinson pushed the lead
back to seven, and the Chargers would get no
closer than two the rest of the way.
Vinson played a big role on the night,
scoring a career-high 23 points and grabbing
11 rebounds. Esmir Guzonjic also had a
double-double with 16 points and 12 boards
before fouling out with 1:50 remaining.
The win gives UNA an 11-10 overall record
with a 4-2 mark in GSC play. UAH falls
to 14-6, 3-3.
The Lions will take on West Florida next
Saturday, Feb. 3, at 7 p.m. in Pensacola,
Fla. UNA will then travel to Valdosta to
take on the VSU Blazers on Feb. 5 at 8 p.m.
