– West Georgia used a late surge to tie the game
at the end of regulation, then outscored
North Alabama 9-5 in overtime to take an
84-80 win over the Lions in Gulf South
Conference men’s basketball action Tuesday
night at Flowers Hall.
The loss drops the Lions’ overall record to
13-13, with a 6-5 mark in the conference.
UNA is now tied with UAH in the East
Division on the horizon of a huge showdown
against the Chargers in four days.
Against the Wolves, Esmir Guzonjic scored a
game-high 25 points and pulled down 10
rebounds in a losing effort. Jerrell Vinson
also had a double-double with 15 points and
12 boards on the night. Milton Nance added
17 points for the Lions.
UWG, however, had four players reach double
digits in scoring and was able to turn up
the defensive pressure down the stretch.
With the Lions holding a 68-60 lead with
7:11 remaining, the Wolves closed regulation
on a 15-7 run. UNA went scoreless in the
final 3:37, and could not get off a shot in
the final minute of play.
In overtime, UNA again found trouble scoring
for the first 3:33 and quickly found itself
trailing by six. The Wolves hits 3-of-4 free
throws down the stretch to secure the win.
The Lions will host UAH on Saturday with the
loser falling to fourth place in the East
Division. The fourth seeded team in the East
will play the West Division’s No. 5 team on
Wednesday, Feb. 28, in Southaven, Miss. The
third seeded team does not have to play
until Friday.
