FLORENCE – Quinn Beckwith scored
28 points and Casey Holt added the Lions’ first triple-double in the
Bobby Champagne era as the University of North Alabama men’s
basketball team cruised to a 119-91 victory over Carver Monday
evening at Flowers Hall.
The Lions
scored more than 100 points for the second time this year,
challenging a few offensive records along the way. UNA went 15-of-36
from three-point range, tying the team record for most attempts and
breaking the previous record of 14 made three-pointers set in 1998
against Trevecca. Beckwith, who finished the game 8-of-11 from
beyond the arc, was just one three-pointer shy of Milton Nance’s
nine made last season.
Against the
Cougars, UNA struggled early, falling behind by as many as seven in
the first half. An alley-oop dunk from Beckwith to Thomas Morris
gave the Lions their first lead at 42-41 at the 4:10 mark. UNA
closed the half on a 18-6 run to take a 56-47 lead at the break.
The Lions
outscored Carver 63-44 over the final 20 minutes with every player
on the roster seeing playing time and scoring points. Six players
reached double digits in scoring, including Holt, who finished the
night with 17 points, 12 rebounds and 11 assists. Morris added 14
points for the game while Kenny Johnson, Thomas Fraise and Dusko
Stojnic tossed in 11 points each for the Lions.
With the win,
UNA improves to 12-5 on the season and will open Gulf South
Conference play Jan. 12 at West Florida. Two days later, the Lions
will travel to Valdosta State, before returning home to face
Montevallo on Jan. 19.
