PENSACOLA, Fla., — Thomas Fraise
scored 27 points and pulled down 10 rebounds as the University of
North Alabama men’s basketball team opened Gulf South Conference
play with an 80-77 win over West Florida Saturday afternoon on the
road. With the win, the Lions improved to 13-5 on the season and
open the year with a 1-0 mark in conference play. West Florida
dropped to 10-5, 0-1.
West Florida
led by as many as nine in the opening 20 minutes of play. The Lions,
however closed the half on a 25-7 run and took a 10-point lead into
the locker room. Fraise hit three-point baskets on consecutive
possessions to key a 16-0 spurt. UNA led 47-37 at the break.
After leading
by double digits most of the second half, the Lions held off a late
UWF rally that saw the Argos take a 75-71 lead with 2:41 remaining.
UNA scored nine straight points to secure the win, including
back-to-back layups by Casey Holt to tie the game and a
three-pointer by Quinn Beckwith to give the Lions a 78-75 lead with
39 seconds remaining
Kenny Johnson
finished the scoring with two free throws and the Argos’ only basket
in the final 2:48 came on a dunk as time expired.
Holt and
Johnson finished the game with 13 points each while Beckwith added
12 for the game. West Florida was led by Charles Bouie’s 17-point
effort.
UNA will travel
to Valdosta State Monday for its next GSC road game against the
Blazers. Tip-off time is set for 7 p.m. CST on the VSU campus.
