FLORENCE
-- Casey Holt scored 30 points and pulled nine rebounds to lead the
University of North Alabama to a 79-71 win over Montevallo in a Gulf
South Conference matchup at Flowers Hall.
UNA led 33-30 at
the half and pushed the lead to 15 in the second half before a
Montevallo charge. Holt hit key free throws down the stretch,
finishing 11-for-13 to help hold off the Falcons.
It was UNA head
coach Bobby Champagne's first win at home against Montevallo in five
tries and evened the Lions all-time record at home in Flowers Hall
against the Falcons at 7-7. Montevallo entered the game as the only
school in the GSC with a winning record against UNA in Florence.
The win ups UNA's
record to 14-6 overall and 2-1 in the GSC. Montevallo falls to 7-9
and 1-2.
In addition to
Holt's 30 points, Thomas Fraise added 15 and Quinn Beckwith had 10.
Montevallo was led by Terrill Humphrey with 22, Brian Carlyle with
14 and Anthony Brown with 11. The Falcons outrebounded UNA 43-40
but had 15 turnovers to just 12 for the Lions.
UNA hit 21-of-28
free throws in the game to 17-of-24 shooting for Montevallo.
The Lions were
cold from the three-point arch, making just four of 25 attempts.
North Alabama
hosts West Alabama Monday night at 8 p.m. in Flowers Hall.
