LIVINGSTON -- For the second time in three days and the
fourth time this season, the University of North Alabama men’s
basketball team picked up a Gulf South Conference road win Monday,
downing West Alabama 86-68 at Pruitt Hall.
The win gives
UNA sole possession of first place in the GSC East Division at 6-2.
The Lions entered Monday’s game in a three-way tie with Valdosta
State and Alabama-Huntsville for first place. But Valdosta State
lost at home to West Georgia and UAH fell on the road to West
Florida, leaving UNA as the lone remaining East Division team with
just two losses.
North Alabama
has 19 wins overall, marking the first time a UNA men’s team has won
as many as 19 games since 1995-96. UNA is 19-7 overall and 6-2 in
league play with four GSC games remaining. Three of UNA’s remaining
GSC games are at home, beginning Saturday against Valdosta State.
Against West
Alabama, UNA built a 43-29 lead at halftime and held off an early
West Alabama run in the second half to cruise to the win.
UNA had five
players score in double-figures, led by Quinn Beckwith with 24.
Kenny Johnson scored 17, Casey Holt 15, Thomas Fraise 11 and Isaac
Gay 10. With 12 rebounds, Holt also recorded his eighth double-
double of the season.
UNA made nine
three-point baskets in the game and held the Tigers to 41 percent
shooting from the floor.
The Lions
completed a season sweep of the Tigers with the win.
The UNA and
Valdosta State men’s game will tip off at 3 p.m. Saturday at Flowers
Hall. The women’s game begins at 1 p.m. and all Lion fans are
encouraged to wear pink in honor of Breast Cancer Awareness.
