FLORENCE – A barrage of three-point baskets in the first
20 minutes by the University of North Alabama sealed West Florida’s
fate Monday as the Lions rolled to a 21-point halftime lead and an
eventual 88-66 win over the Argonauts.
UNA, now 21-7
overall and 8-2 in the Gulf South Conference, made nine three-point
baskets in the first half had total control with a 47-26 lead at
intermission.
With UNA playing
substitutes liberally in the second half, a nearly 30-point lead was
cut to 16 midway through the half but UNA held on for the 22-point
win.
UNA improved to
12-2 all-time against West Florida and, in sweeping this season’s
series, current Lion coach Bobby Champagne is 9-1 against the
Argonauts.
Thomas Fraise led
four UNA players in double-figures with 20 points and 13 rebounds.
Casey Holt added 19 points, Quinn Beckwith 17 and Kenny Johnson 13.
The Lions
out-rebounded the Argonauts 41-31 and shot 49.2 percent from the
floor.
Charles Bouie and
Kenny Holmes led West Florida with 11 points each.
UNA has a two-game
lead in the GSC race with just two games to play and the Lions are
trying to earn their first GSC East Division title since 1995-96.
