HUNTSVILLE - Andrew Chesney hit four three-pointers and
scored a game-high 25 points as the University of North Alabama
men's basketball team clinched the Gulf South Conference East
Division championship with a 66-56 road win over in-state rival
Alabama-Huntsville Saturday evening at Spragins Hall.
The division
title is the first for the Lions since 1996 and gives the team a
22-7 record on the year with a 9-2 mark in GSC play. UNA will close
the regular season on Feb. 26 at home against West Georgia.
Against the
Chargers, UNA trailed most of the first half, including an
eight-point deficit at 24-16 with 3:08 remaining. UAH led 26-23 at
the break.
The Chargers
stretched the lead back to 51-43 at the 8:49 mark before UNA made
its final push. Seven points by Chesney and a pair of three-pointers
by Quinn Beckwith keyed a 19-1 run as the Lions took control.
Beckwith
finished with 14 points, while Casey Holt tossed in 13 to round out
the top scores for UNA. Thomas Fraise also pulled down 11 rebounds
on the night.
