LAKELAND, Fla., – A three-point play by Casey Holt with
21 seconds remaining capped 22-9 run over the final eight minutes
and lifted the North Alabama men’s basketball team to a 72-71
come-from-behind victory over Christian Brothers Saturday in the
opening round of the 2008 South Region Tournament in Lakeland, Fla.
The Lions
(25-8) trailed 62-50 at the 8:09 mark when a three-pointer by Kenny
Johnson started the rally. Johnson scored nine points down the
stretch, while Holt got seven of his team-high 18, including the
game’s final four points to give UNA the lead for just the fourth
time in the game.
The final score
was not secure until a pair of last-second shots by CBU (22-10) were
off the mark, sending the Lions into the second round of the NCAA
Division II Tournament for the first time since the 1995-96 season.
Thomas Fraise
added 17 points for UNA while Johnson had 12 and Quinn Beckwith
tossed in 10 on the night.
The one-point
victory avenged an 80-69 loss to the Bucs in the semi-finals of the
Gulf South Conference Tournament exactly one week earlier. It also
gives the Lions a 10-0 record in rematch games this season.
UNA will face
Ouachita Baptist Sunday at 6:30 p.m. in semi-final action on the
campus of Florida Southern College. The eight-seeded Tigers knocked
of the host Moccasins 74-69.
