UNA KNOCKS OFF NOVA SOUTHEASTERN 78-68
FLORENCE – Five players reached
double digits in scoring as the University of North Alabama men’s
basketball team defeated Nova Southeastern 78-68 in its home opener
Saturday afternoon at Marriott Shoals Tip-off Classic.
Casey Holt
scored a team-high 21 points and pulled down seven rebounds to lead
the Lions, who even their season record to 2-2 on the year.
Newcomers Thomas Fraise and Andrews Chesney had 14 points each,
while Isaac Gay added 12 points.
Kenny Johnson
rounded out the top scorers for the Lions with 11 on the day.
UNA built a
41-32 advantage at the half and held of late charge by the Sharks.
Nova took its
first lead of the second half at the 9:36 mark on a three-pointer by
Oresti Nitsios. The shot capped a 10-2 run and gave the Sharks a
56-55 lead.
The Lions
responded with a three-pointer by Johnson and never trailed again.
Johnson also
finished the game with nine assists.
Nova held a
45-36 edge in rebounding, but hit just nine-of-17 free throws.
UNA shot 43.3
percent from the floor and connected on 12-of-17 from the foul line.
UNA will take
on Miles Sunday at 2:30 in Flowers Hall. The Golden Bears were 76-73
winners over Alabama-Huntsville in the early game. The Chargers and
Sharks will also square off at 12:30.
