FLORENCE -- Casey Holt scored 23 points and added 10
rebounds and five assists to lead host North Alabama to an 87-82 win
over Miles College in the final game of the Marriott Shoals Hoops
Classic.
UNA held a slim
32-28 lead at halftime but extended it to double-digits in the
second half before a late Miles charge.
Holt, who was
chosen as the Most Valuable Player in the Classic, secured the win
with two made free throws in the final seconds. With the win, UNA is
now 3-2 overall and won both of its games in the Classic, downing
Nova Southeastern and Miles. Holt was 7-of-13 from the floor,
8-of-10 from the free thow line and made one three-point basket. He
was joined on the All-Classic team by UNA's Isaac Gay who scored 21
points and pulled seven rebounds against Miles. Thomas Fraise added
15 points for UNA and Kenny Johnson had 11.
Miles College
was led for the second game in a row by Flawaan Flaggs who scored 23
points. Alton Hicks added 12, Lance Tippett 11 and Leon McKinney and
Reggie Griffin 10 each for Miles. Flaggs and Hicks were selected for
the All-Classic team.
UNA, now 2-0 at
home at Flowers Hall, shot 55 percent from the floor in the second
half and held Miles to just 8-of-35 shooting from behind the
three-point line in the game. North Alabama dominated the boards,
out-rebounding Miles 57-28.
The Lions will
play at home Tuesday against Blue Mountain at 8 p.m. and will host
Southern Arkansas Saturday night at 6 p.m. That game time is a
change from 3 p.m. due to UNA hosting a second round NCAA Division
II football playoff game.
