FLORENCE
– University of North Alabama head men’s
basketball coach Bobby Champagne has
announced the signing of Mirnes Islamovic
for the 2008-09 academic year. The 6-8,
240-pound Brcko, Bosnia native is currently
averaging 11.3 points and 7.6 rebounds at
Florida Gulf Coast Community College in
Panama City, Fla.
“We are very
excited to a player as talented as Mirnes,”
Champagne said. “We think that he will make
an immediate impact on our program.”
Islamovic, who
signed with the Lions during the first week
of the national signing period, has helped
the Commodores earn a No. 18 national
ranking in the national junior college poll.
As a freshman in 2005-06, he averaged 25
points, 12 rebounds and one block per game
during the final nine games. He missed the
entire 2006-07 season due to injury.
Prior to coming
to the United States, he averaged 42 points
and 16 rebounds for the Brcko Junior Team.
He had a season-high 68 points and 24
rebounds. He also played for the Bosnian
Kadet National Team and averaged 18 points
and eight rebounds.
