FLORENCE – University of North Alabama head men’s basketball coach Bobby Champagne has announced the signing of Mirnes Islamovic for the 2008-09 academic year. The 6-8, 240-pound Brcko, Bosnia native is currently averaging 11.3 points and 7.6 rebounds at Florida Gulf Coast Community College in Panama City, Fla.

“We are very excited to a player as talented as Mirnes,” Champagne said. “We think that he will make an immediate impact on our program.”

Islamovic, who signed with the Lions during the first week of the national signing period, has helped the Commodores earn a No. 18 national ranking in the national junior college poll. As a freshman in 2005-06, he averaged 25 points, 12 rebounds and one block per game during the final nine games. He missed the entire 2006-07 season due to injury.

Prior to coming to the United States, he averaged 42 points and 16 rebounds for the Brcko Junior Team. He had a season-high 68 points and 24 rebounds. He also played for the Bosnian Kadet National Team and averaged 18 points and eight rebounds.
