Twenty years ago, Radford's Bryon Samuels was a player at UNC-Asheville when a major brawl broke out. The event got national attention and Samuels writes that he was naive enough to think it wouldn't happen again. Plus, Holy Cross coach Ralph Willard gives his thoughts fan behavior and UW-Milwaukee's Bruce Pearl rants and raves about the mess.

It's not often that Columbia gets top billing, but the Lions are off to a 2-0 start (won the Inaugural Columbia Classic) and for the first time since 1974, Columbia has opened with two wins over Division I teams. The Lions grab CollegeInsider.com's "Team of the Week" honors. Tournament MVP Matt Preston (pictured) scored 36 points in the two games. Nice beginning to 04-05 for head coach Joe Jones, a one-time Villanova assistant for six seasons... How about Travis Ford's Eastern Kentucky squad winning at Dayton. The EKU people are calling it one of the biggest wins in recent history for the program... The under appreciated Kirk Speraw has picked up where he left off last season at Central Florida. The Golden Knights captured the Top of the World Classic with wins over Utah State and New Mexico State. Under Speraw, the Golden Knights are now 11-2 in their last 13 tournament games with three tournament championships. Kudos to the coaches who saw fit to keep UCF among the ranked (No. 22) in the preseason Mid-Major Top 25... I have heard a lot of observations regarding the Pistons-Pacers fallout, but I am still wondering about all those "full" cups of beer that were poured on players leaving the court. With less than a minute remaining in the game you can still buy a beer? Those people have to drive home in a few minutes. It's all about the old mighty dollar... Finally, what a huge win for my friend Bobby Champagne at Division II North Alabama. His Lions knocked off No. 1 ranked Southern Indiana.

(1) Once and for all, the WCC is more than just Gonzaga. Of course few know that because most of the media obsesses with the 'Zags. Let me introduce you to Santa Clara, St. Mary's, USF, Pepperdine and others. Oh an until you can show me where Gonzaga's financial resources are in the same hemisphere as the worst PAC-10 program, it's a "MID-MAJOR" program. They do have high-major talent, but that doesn't mean they are not a mid-major. Sorry Zags fans.

(2) I actually made two points above so we'll keep this one brief... Didn't Ron Artest request time off anyway for "rap-album-promotion-fatigue?

(3) It doesn't take a genius to surmise that Syracuse is a Final Four team, but you might be surprised at who I believe is a critical part of their team -- Senior Josh Pace.

(4) Congrats to Duquesne coach Danny Nee on win No. 400. Last year his Dukes posted the most wins (12) since the 1993-94 season and this season he has a good looking freshman in Chauncey Duke. The 6-foot-6 product of Springfield, MO has a bright future in the A-10.
