WEST FLORIDA RALLIES TO TOP LIONS 101-90 (BOX
SCORE)
PENSACOLA, Fla., - The University of North Alabama men’s
basketball team watched an eight-point half-time lead slip away as
West Florida rallied for a 101-90 home victory Saturday afternoon in
Gulf South Conference action.
The Argonaut’s Byran Richardson scored a game-high 30 points on the
day to lead three UWF players in double figures. Josh Sullivan added
24 points, while Kashif Russell tossed in 16 points.
UNA led by as many as 11 points in the first half and took a 40-32
lead into the locker room. Jerrell Vinson scored six of his 15
points in the first half, including a free throw that gave the Lions
a 40-29 lead with just 16 second remaining.
A three-pointer by the Argonaut’s John Stanley at the buzzer trimmed
the lead to eight points and set the stage for dominating offensive
performance by UWF over the final 20 minutes.
In the second half, West Florida hit 24 of 34 shots for a blazing 71
percent from the field. The Argonauts also connected with six
three-point baskets and took their first lead of the game midway
through the second period.
A put-back by Sullivan at the 10:07 mark put UWF on top 62-61, and
continued a 9-0 run that ended with the Argonauts leading 67-61 with
8:38 remaining. The Lions cut the lead to one at 71-70 on a layup by
Vinson with 6:41 remaining, but could never regain the lead.
Pervis Key led UNA with 28 points on the day. The senior from
Courtland shot 55 percent from the field, including a five of eight
showing from three-point range. A.J. Gordon added 21 points, while
Javier Palacios joined Vinson with 15 points for the game.
The loss drops the Lions’ overall record to 11-10 with a 3-5 record
in the GSC. West Florida improves to 10-11, 2-6.
UNA will continue its GSC road swing Monday evening against Valdosta
State. Game time is set for 7 p.m.
