The cross country
program at UNA began in 1973 under the direction of Jack Weaver, who
was also the school's track coach. The men's cross country team only
ran one season and the sport was not resumed at UNA until 1984.
Under the direction of Eddie Rivers, UNA began competing in both men
and women's cross country in 1984.
The UNA women won back-to-back Gulf
South Conference titles in 1987 and 1988. The best finish by the men
in the GSC was a second place finish in 1985.
Emry McKay of Huntsville has been the
top individual runner in UNA cross country history, earning three
All- GSC, three All-South Region and three All-America honors. She
competed in the NCAA Division II National Championships for three
years straight as an individual.
