FLORENCE -- University of North
Alabama senior cross country runner Emry
McKay of Huntsville will make a run at a
national championship Saturday when she
competes in the NCAA Division II National
Championships at the Escambia County
Equestrian Center in Pensacola, Fla.
McKay earned a
spot in the NCAA Championships for the third
straight year when she won the Division II
South Regional title. She finished 29th at
the 2004 NCAA Championships and improved to
17th in 2005.
McKay has also
been honored as the NCAA Division II South
Regional Cross Country Female Athlete of the
Year by the U.S. Track and Field and Cross
Country Coaches Association. She became the
first regional cross country champion from
UNA, clocking a 21:28 on the 6,000 meter
course in Memphis to edge Harding's Janee
Jones.
A two-time
All-American, three-time All-South Region
and three-time All-Gulf South Conference
honoree, McKay ran at Bob Jones High School
and then competed one season at the
University of Alabama-Birmingham before
transferring to UNA.
During her three-year career at UNA, Emry
has won eight races, including this year's
regional championship.
