Former University of North Alabama runner Scott Trimble returned to the Lion cross country program in 2003 as head coach and is transforming the Lion program into one that can be competitive on a conference, regional and national level.

In 2004 the UNA women had a 55-28 record, finished sixth in the Gulf South Conference and sent top runner Emry McKay to the NCAA Division II National Championships.

The UNA men finished with a 38-28 record in 2004 and finished sixth in the Gulf South Conference meet.  For both teams, the records marked their first winning seasons in 15 years.

In 2005 the women improved to 56-27 and McKay finished 17th in the Division II Championships. The men also enjoyed their second straight winning season with a 36-31 mark.

Last season the UNA women finished third in the GSC for their best league showing since 1992. The men’s team was fifth in the GSC for their best conference finish since 1997.

Set to begin his fifth season as head cross country coach at UNA, Trimble has veteran squads returning on both the men’s and women’s teams.

A native of Muscle Shoals, Trimble was a four-year letterman on the UNA cross country team, running from 1986-89 and earning All-Gulf South Conference honors as a junior.

Following his graduation from Athens State in 1993, Trimble has spent the last 13 years as a coach on the high school level, working two years as head boy’s track coach at Colbert County High School, two years as head boy’s track coach at Sheffield High School and eight years as head girl’s track coach at Muscle Shoals High School.

Trimble is the 11th head cross country coach in the history of the UNA program that dates back to 1973.
He is married to former UNA women’s basketball player Leigh Anna McDaniel and they have a daughter, Mary Anna.
