UNA
defense posts third shutout in three games
TROY, Ala. -- University of North
Alabama freshman goalkeeper Mally Cash of
Huntsville celebrated being named Gulf South
Conference Defender of the Week by posting
her second shutout in three collegiate games
Wednesday as the Lions battled to a 0-0 tie
with Division I Troy.
UNA, now 2-0-1,
battled the Trojans even over 90 minutes.
There was no overtime played, with the game
called after 90 minutes due to lightning.
In 270 minutes
of play this season, Cash, who transferred
to UNA from Troy, has allowed just one goal.
She recorded six saves in goal Wednesday,
while UNA managed six shots of its own and
four shots on goal. Troy had 15 shots in the
game, including 11 in the second half, but
Cash and the UNA defense were up the
challenge.
"We had a
better first half but we got a lot of
pressure in the second half," said Winkworth.
"Mally kept us in it and I'm very happy that
we could play a road game against a Division
I opponent and keep them scoreless.
"We have only
allowed one goal in three matches and it
shows that the system we are using is
working," Winkworth added. "It's not
about scoring a lot of goals. It's about
scoring more goals than your opponent. Even
though we didn't score today, we played very
well and gave a great effort and I'm pleased
with the result."
UNA plays its
first home match on September 8 at North
Florence Park.
