FLORENCE
-- University of North Alabama women's
soccer coach Graham Winkworth knew his 2007
squad had the potential to be one of the
school's best offensive squads in recent
years.
The Lions lived
up to that expectation in their season
opener as seven different players scored and
12 players had at least one shot in UNA's
8-0 thrashing of Brewton-Parker at North
Florence Park.
The eight goals
was the most scored by a Lion team since an
8-0 win over Ouachita Baptist in 1999.
"The best thing
about this win is that it was a total team
effort," said Winkworth. "We had players
scoring from all different parts of the
field and that means that opponents can't
just concentrate on one player or one area
against us."
The Lions had
their first goal just 1:04 into the season
as freshman Natalie Sherk of Sarasota, Fla.
took a pass from sophomore transfer Tassia
Augusto and put it in the net past the
Barrons' goalkeeper Lineon Felix. Augusto
assisted on another goal just two minutes
later as senior Claire Bennett of Alberta,
Canada scored at the 3:47 mark to make it
2-0.
Senior captain
Kressa Gibson of Rogers, Ark., scored from
30 yards out at 13:06 to push UNA's
advantage to 3-0. A header by freshman Kelli
Coffman of Warrensburg, Mo., off a pass from
Gibson made it 4-0 at 27:35 of the first
half. Augusto, in her first season at UNA
after transferring from Martin Methodist,
scored the final two goals of the first half
in the 34th and 36th minutes to make it 6-0
at intermission.
UNA added two
second half goals as sophomore Paige Hess of
Conway, Ark., scored at 59:56 off an assist
from Augusto and sophomore Elise Denton of
Madison, Ala., scored at 79:11 on a penalty
kick. Denton also assisted on one of
Augusto's first half goals.
The Lions
outshot Brewton-Parker 35-2, with the
Barrons' first shot attempt coming 40
minutes into the game.
Freshman Carly
Rhodes of Franklin, Tenn., shutout
Brewton-Parker for 79 minutes, recording one
save.
Freshman
Brittani Lawley of Moody, Ala., played the
last 11 minutes in goal.
The bad news
for the Lions' soccer team is that senior
midfielder Alison Woodman will miss four to
six weeks of the season with a broken arm.
She suffered the injury earlier in the week
in a scrimmage.
