CARROLLTON, Ga.
-- The University of North Alabama
women's soccer team scored four
goals in a 20-minute period of the
second half and rolled to a historic
5-1 road win at West Georgia. The
win, UNA's 12th of the year, not
only set a school record for most
wins in a season but guarantees the
Lions a spot in the 2009 Gulf South
Conference Soccer Tournament. UNA
hasn't earned a GSC Tournament berth
since 1999 and has only qualified
for the tournament twice in its
previous 11 seasons of collegiate
competition.
UNA jumped out to a 1-0 lead on a
goal by Beth Spurr in the first half
at West Georgia. The Lions then
added four goals early in the second
half, with one each from Tassia
Augusto and Chloe Roberts and two
from Jamie Takala. Roberts was her
21st of the season, which continues
to extend her school single-season
record.
Augusto's goal was her 15th of the
season and 50th of her career, which
extends her UNA career mark.
West Georgia scored a late goal to
avoid the shutout.
"We started a little tentative and
jittery but we shook that off and
played very well early in the second
half,"
said UNA head coach Graham Winkworth.
"I'm just extremely proud of this
team in already earning a trip to
the GSC Tournament, where we have
not been in 10 years. It's a big
step toward our goals."
The 12 wins in a season breaks the
mark of 11 by the 1999 and 2000 UNA
squads. The Lions' current winning
streak of six straight is also a
school record. UNA is also
guaranteed a winning season for the
first time since 2004.
UNA plays at Brewton-Parker on
Monday at 3:30.
