BOX SCORE
FLORENCE
-- It was a performance that University of
North Alabama women's soccer coach Graham
Winkworth said he has been waiting nine
months to see. With his team's strong finish
in 2008, and the addition of six promising
newcomers, he felt that he might have the
beginnings of something special this season.
Saturday night the Lions downed Montevallo
3-0 in impressive fashion at the UNA Soccer
Field in their 2009 opener. Senior Tassia
Augusto os Sao Paulo, Brazil, the school's
all-time leading scorer, netted two goals to
push her career mark to 37. Freshman Nikki
Brown of Bognor Regis, England scored UNA's
final goal and freshman Jo Chubb of Crawley,
England had two assists.
"This is really a good win for us," said
Winkworth, "And I've been waiting nine
months for it. We have the makings of what
could be a very good team and this is the
first step."
Augusto got UNA on the scoreboard at 14:49
of the first half when she took a pass from
Chubb and pushed the ball past Montevallo's
Alyssa Maxwell into the net. North Alabama's
defense did not allow a Montevallo shot in
the first 45 minutes of the match. The game
remained 1-0 until the 62:24 mark when
Augusto scored again, and again it was off a
pass from Chubb. Brown scored her first goal
for the Lions at 76:27 after breaking free
down the right side and made it 3-0.
UNA's Alex McLay had four saves in recording
the shutout. UNA outshot Montevallo 16-7.
