AMERICUS, Ga.
– Three
games and three shutouts !
University of North Alabama women’s
soccer coach Graham Winkworth couldn’t
have dreamed up a better start for his
team’s 2009 season as the Lions rolled
to a 7-0 win over Georgia Southwestern
to improve to 3-0.
UNA has
outscored its opponents 18-0 in three
matches, downing Montevallo 3-0,
Limestone 8-0 and Georgia Southwestern
7-0.
Georgia
Southwestern came into the game 2-0 but
UNA quickly took control of the match
early with a goal at the 11:52 mark. The
Lions added two more scores just before
the half to make it 3-0 at intermission.
The Lions
padded their score with four second half
goals.
“We are
very pleased because we not only have
three wins but also have beaten three
good opponents,” said Winkworth. “It is
evident already that we are much deeper
than we have been in the past .”
Freshman
Chloe Roberts scored three goals,
freshman Chelsea Ross added two and
Tassia Augusto scored one. It was
Augusto/s seventh goal of the season and
42nd of her career as she
extended her UNA career record. Jo Chubb
and Nikki Brown had two assists each for
the Lions and Adriene Aragon added one.
UNA,
ranked fifth in the Southeast Region by
the National Soccer Coaches Association
of America, will host third ranked Lynn
on Friday at 7 p.m. at the UNA Soccer
Field. Christian Brothers and Eckerd
will play prior to the UNA game Friday
at 5 p.m.
