FLORENCE
-- The University of North Alabama
women's soccer team maintained its
perfect record Friday with a 2-0 home
win over 22nd ranked Lynn University.
The Lions, now 4-0 for the first time in
school history, not only have a perfect
record but have also not allowed a goal
this season in 360 minutes.
The Lions were challenged early and
often by a Lynn squad that came into the
match at 2-0, but UNA's defense was up
to the challenge. The Lions got six
saves from goalkeeper Alex McLay and the
UNA defenders were solid all night in
stopping threats by the Knights.
"We're defending so well, if we keep
defending like this our team can go a
long way," said UNA coach Graham
Winkworth. "I told our players, if we
can out-defend our opponents, we'll
always have chances to score with the
players we have on the other end."
One of those players is freshman Chloe
Roberts, who scored both of the Lions'
goals and pushed her season total to
nine. The first goal Friday came at the
42:53 mark off a flip from Tassia
Augusto as Roberts was able to turn and
fire the ball past Lynn's Kelsey Butler.
With the Lions clinging to a 1-0 lead,
Roberts scored again off an assist from
Beth Spurr at 69:20.
Lynn outshot UNA 11-9 and the Lions
managed just one shot in the second half
but made it count.
UNA's 4-0 start surpasses the school's
previous best start of 3-0 in 2007. The
Lions' four straight shutouts are also a
record, breaking the mark of three
straight by the 1999 squad.
UNA goalkeeper Alex McLay has 344:30
consecutive scoreless minutes in goal
this season, breaking the UNA
single-season record of 302 minutes by
Shelley Huggins in 1999.
The UNA team record for consecutive
scoreless minutes was 345 in 1999 and
was also snapped in the win.
North Alabama hosts Eckerd Sunday at
3:30.
