UNA SOCCER TEAM SUFFERS FIRST LOSS
NEWBERRY, S.C.
-- After opening the season with five
straight shutout wins, the University of
North Alabama women's soccer team
allowed its first goal of the season and
came out on the short end of a 1-0 score
to Newberry College Friday.
UNA, now 5-1 overall, had 18 shots and
eight shots on goal but couldn't a ball
in the net as Newberry's Emily Rhoades
recorded a shutout. Laura Mottel of
Newberry scored the game's only goal at
the 41:43 mark of the first half on a
header in front of the UNA goal.
"It was not a good performance for us,"
said UNA coach Graham Winkworth.
"Newberry out-fought us and they
deserved the victory, but we didn't play
well in a tough environment."
The Lions, ranked 18th nationally by the
NSCAA, will try and get back on the
winning track Sunday when they travel to
Clayton State.
