FLORENCE
-- One quick glance at the NCAA Division II
women's soccer statistics and you will
immediately see how the University of North
Alabama has gotten off to the best start in
school history. The Lions are fourth
nationally in scoring as a team, have three
of the top ranked offensive players in the
country and have posted six shutouts on
defense. Those statistics have helped the
team get out to a 9-1-1 start and earn a No.
25 national ranking in Division II.
UNA freshman Chloe Roberts of Plymouth,
England and senior Tassia Augusto of Sao
Paulo, Brazil are a high-powered scoring
combination for the Lions. Roberts ranks
second nationally in scoring with 16 goals
and
1.5 goal-per-game average. Augusto, with 14
goals, ranks fourth at 1.4. The two players
are tied for third nationally in points per
game at 3.3. With 16 goals, Roberts trails
only Gabriela Demoner of Franklin Pierce,
who has scored 20.
Another UNA freshman, Nikki Brown from
Bognor Regis, England, has already broken
the UNA single season assist record and
leads Division II with 11 assists and a 1.11
average. She is tied for the national lead
with Vanessa Moreira of Dowling.
As a team UNA is fourth in scoring at 4.5.
The Lions trail only St. Leo (5.0), West
Florida (4.78) and Franklin Pierce (4.6).
UNA hosts Alabama-Huntsville in a key Gulf
South Conference match Friday evening at 7
p.m. at the UNA Soccer Field.
