ROBERTS WINS PLAYER AND FRESHMAN OF THE
YEAR HONORS; WINKWORTH IS COACH OF THE YEAR
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - University of North
Alabama forward Chloe Roberts became the
fourth women's soccer player and first since
2003 to claim both the Gulf South Conference
Player and Freshman of the Year awards. The
Plymouth, England native led the GSC in
shots (105), points (71) and goals scored
(29) in her first season as a Lion,
shattering team records in all offensive
categories. The honors are the first major
soccer awards in UNA school history as the
Lions earned their first GSC Tournament
berth since 1999. Roberts also led the way
for North Alabama who totaled the
second-most All-GSC selections and equaled
the most first-team honorees with five.
Joining Roberts on the squad is two-time
first-team honoree goalkeeper Alexandra
McLay of Naples, Fla., and newcomers Julia
Osmond (defender) of Southampton, England,
Nikki Brown pf Bognor Regis, England and Jo
Chubb (midfielders) of Crawley, England.
West Florida led all schools with eight All-GSC
selections.
After UWF and UNA was Harding with two All-GSC
players and Christian Brothers,
Alabama-Huntsville and West Georgia with one
choice each. P
North Alabama head coach Graham Winkworth
earned the school's first GSC Women's Soccer
Coach of the Year after guiding the Lions to
their first GSC Tournament berth in 10
years. In his seventh season at the helm of
the UNA program, Winkworth led the team to
unprecedented heights as the Lions broke
school records for wins in a season.
Winkworth's recruiting abilities were also
highlighted as four of the five Lions
selected to the All-GSC First Team were
freshman, including Player and Freshman of
the Year Chloe Roberts.
The Lions, 17-2-1 overall, play
Alabama-Huntsville in the semifinal round of
the GSC Tournament Friday in Pensacola, Fla.
