SOFTBALL TEAM GETS
23 HITS IN PAIR OF SHUTOUT VICTORIES
DECATUR – The University of North
Alabama softball team picked up a pair of
shutout victories Saturday at the UAH
Charger Chillout, knocking off Northern
Kentucky and Kentucky Wesleyan to improve to
11-1 on the season.
Hartselle’s Sarah Whitlow went 5-for-8 on
the day as the Lions downed NKU 8-0 in five
innings, before picking up the 5-0 over KWC
at Wilson Morgan Park in Decatur. As a team,
UNA had 23 hits on the day.
The win over NKU was the third of the season
for UNA. Starting pitcher Sabrina Roberts
needed just 41 pitches to pick up the
victory on the mound and improve to 4-0 on
the year. The junior from Decatur gave up
just three hits and added two strikeouts on
the day.
On offense, Whitlow went 3-for-4 at the
plate with a pair of RBI.
The Lions got things going in the top of the
second inning, sending nine batters to the
plate and scoring four runs. UNA scored two
more runs in the third before getting single
runs in the top of the fourth and fifth
innings.
Decatur’s Lindsey Greene went 2-for-4 with
two RBI. Kim Lee also scored three times and
had two doubles during a 2-for-3 showing. As
a team, the Lions had 13 hits, including six
doubles.
Against KWC, the Lions broke a scoreless tie
with a run in the top of the fifth inning.
UNA then added three runs in the sixth and
another in the seventh to pick up the 5-0
victory. Whitlow and Decatur’s Lindsey Bates
each went 2-for-4 in the contest.
Megan Niesel (4-0) got the win on the mound
after scattering three hits and striking out
three batters in seven innings of work.
The Lions will continue play at the Chillout
on Saturday with a pair of afternoon games.
UNA will play Central Missouri at 1 p.m.
before facing Bellarmine at 3 p.m.
