LIONS DOWN CENTRAL
MISSOURI, BELLARMINE TO IMPROVE TO 13-1
DECATUR – The University of North
Alabama softball team improved to 13-1 on
the season with a pair of wins at the UAH
Charger Chillout Saturday at Decatur’s
Wilson Morgan Park. The Lions held on for a
3-2 victory over Central Missouri before
routing Bellarmine 15-5 in five innings.
Against UCM, the Lions took a 3-0 lead into
the seventh inning but had to hold on after
the Jennies hit a two-run home run to make
things interesting. Starting pitcher
Stephanie Glienke, however, was able to
recover and record the final two outs to end
the game.
Glienke gave up nine hits, but also recorded
nine strikeouts to improve to 4-1 on the
year.
UNA was able to break a scoreless tie with
two runs in the bottom of the fifth inning.
An RBI-double by Jessica Liddy scored Kim
Lee and Lindsey Greene. The Lions added what
would turn out to be the winning run in the
bottom of the sixth when Andrea Palmer
scored on a fielding error.
Liddy finished the game 3-for-3 at the plate
with a pair or RBI.
Against Bellarmine, Liddy had another
perfect game at the plate, going 2-for-2
with a single and a grand slam. Her four-run
shot was part of an 11-run inning for the
Lions, who scored 15 runs off 13 hits.
After the Knights took a 1-0 lead with a
single run in the top of the second, UNA
responded with four runs in the bottom of
the inning. In the third inning, however,
the Lions sent 14 batters to the plate.
Nikki Reed also got a three-run homer in the
inning as UNA took a 15-1 lead.
Bellarmine was able to score a run in the
top of the fourth and three in the fifth,
but could not get the game under the
eight-run mercy rule.
Greene, Reed, Sarah Whitlow, Amy Goebel and
Emily Beckwith each recorded two hits in the
game.
UNA will wrap up play at the Chillout on
Sunday, facing Truman State at 9 a.m. and
Barry at 11 a.m.
