SOFTBALL TEAM SPLITS WITH NO. 16 BARRY IN FINAL DAY OF CHILLOUT

Return to UNA Softball Homepage >>>

MADISON – After soggy field conditions from the previous night’s rain created several changes in the scheduling of the UAH Charger Chillout on Sunday, the University of North Alabama softball team split its final two games against No. 16 Barry at Madison Academy High School.

The Lions posted a 1-0 victory over the Bucs (11-5) in game one before falling 5-3 in the second game. UNA is now 14-2 on the year with both losses coming by a combined four runs at the hands of ranked opponents.

In the first game, Sabrina Roberts won the pitching duel for the Lions to improve to 5-0 on the season. The junior from Decatur scattered six hits and struck out three batters without giving up a walk.

UNA got the only run it would need in the top of the first inning when an RBI-single by Lindsey Bates scored Jessica Liddy from second base.  Liddy reached base by hitting her team-high seventh double of the season.

The Lions took a 3-0 lead into the sixth inning before watching Barry rally for five unanswered runs to get the win. The Bucs scored three runs in the top of the sixth and two in the seventh to post the win.

UNA was able to load the bases in the bottom of the seventh, but could not push a run across the plate. For the game, the Lions left 13 runners on base.

Maggie Eades doubled to right center in the bottom of the first to drive in Liddy and Sarah Whitlow to open the scoring. Neither team scored again until the bottom of the fifth, when Andrea Palmer hit a solo home run to give UNA a 3-0 lead.

The Bucs responded in the top of the sixth with a three-run home run by Amanda Goelz to tie the game. Back-to-back RBI-hits in the seventh but Barry ahead by two, making the final score 5-3.

Whitlow led the Lions at the plate, going 2-for-4 for the game.  Stephanie Glienke (4-2) took the loss on the mound, allowing five earned runs off seven hits.

UNA will return to action on Wednesday with a home double-header against Trevecca. First pitch is scheduled for 2 p.m. at the UNA Softball Complex at Cox Creek Park.
