–Kendall Miller’s pinch-hit, three-run home
run
in the bottom of the sixth inning secured a
9-0 win for the North Alabama softball team
over Trevecca Nazarene Wednesday evening at
Cox Creek Park. The shot to right field was
the first of the season for the sophomore
and helped the Lions salvage a split with
the Trojans.
Trevecca took the first game 5-3, giving UNA
a 15-3 record on the season.
In game one, the Lions left 10 runners on
base with no player getting more than one
hit in the contest. Megan Niesel suffered
her first loss of the season on the mound.
She gave up nine hits and struck out three
to fall to 5-1 on the year.
After the Trojans scored a run in the top of
the first inning, they extended their lead
to 4-0 with three in the second. UNA was
able to cut the lead to 4-3 in the bottom of
the second, but would not score again.
Trevecca added an insurance run in the top
of the sixth to make the final score 5-3.
Sabrina Roberts pitched a two-hit shutout in
game two to remain unbeaten the year at 6-0.
The junior from Hartselle struck out two
batters with no walks in six innings of
work. Her earned run average for the season
is 0.80.
Offensively, Lindsey Greene led the way at
the plate for the Lions. The junior had
three extra-base hits, with a double and two
triples to finish 3-for-4 with two RBI for
the game.
Jessica Liddy and Lindsey Bates added two
hits each as UNA scored two runs in the
bottom of the first inning, three in the
fourth and one in the fifth to set up
Miller’s game-winning homer in the sixth.
The Lions will not return home until April
6th against West Alabama. Before then,
the team will play 20 games, including a
four-game schedule in Lakeland, Fla., March
9-10. UNA is set to take on No. 2 Florida
Southern in a double-header on the 9th,
before facing Saint Leo twice the next day.
