LIONS IMPROVE TO 17-7 ON THE YEAR

CARROLLTON, Ga.,
- Lindsey Greene went 5-for-7 on the day and Jessica Liddy hit two home runs as the University of North Alabama softball team opened Gulf South Conference play Saturday with a pair of road wins at West Georgia. The two victories improved the Lions’ record to 17-7 on the year with a 2-0 mark in the conference.

In the first game, the Lions got single runs in the top of the first, second, fourth and sixth innings to pick up the 4-1 win. Sabrina Roberts improved to 7-2 on the year after scattering six hits and striking out four batters in the complete-game victory.

Offensively, Greene had a 2-for-3 showing to lead the Lions, while Kristin Maas and Amy Goebel each went 2-for-4 at the plate. Liddy drove in two of the team’s four runs after drawing a bases-loaded walk in the fourth inning, and hitting a solo home run in the top of the sixth.

Liddy, who became UNA’s all-time leader in hits with 203 for her career, provided the winning runs in the second game with a three-run home run in the top of the seventh inning to give the Lions a 6-3 win. The shot to center field was the senior’s fourth homer of the year and leaves her one shy of Krystal Hand’s career-record of 31.

The home run broke a 3-3 tie and set the stage for Stephanie Glienke to earn the win on the mound. The senior, who allowed two hits and had two strikeouts, improved to 5-3 on the year after pitching the final two innings in relief of starter Megan Niesel.

The Lions took a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning on a two-run home run by Lindsey Bates, and led 3-0 after Amy Goebel added a solo shot in the second. West Georgia tied the score after scoring single runs in the bottom of the second, third and fifth innings.

Greene again led the way at the plate, going 3-for-4 with two runs scored. Bates added a double and finished the second game 2-for-4 with a pair of RBI.

The Lions will continue their GSC road swing with two games at West Alabama on Sunday. The two teams will open a double-header at 1 p.m.
