LIONS DROP 5-2, 4-3 DOUBLE-HEADER TO LADY STATESMEN

SOUTHAVEN, Miss., - The North Alabama softball team committed five errors and was out-hit 21-11 during a pair of losses to Delta State Sunday in Southaven, Miss. The Lions dropped to 21-9 overall after falling 5-2 and 4-3 to the Lady Statesmen.

In the first game, Delta State pitcher Edie Oliver stuck out six batters and took a shutout into the seventh inning before picking up the 5-2 win for the Lady Statesmen.

UNA had trouble findings its offensive swing. Sarah Whitlow’s single in the fourth inning was the first hit for the Lions, who managed only five hits for the game. Kim Lee was the only UNA player with two hits after going 2-for-3 at the plate.

DSU took an early 3-0 lead after scoring two runs in the top of the first inning and one in the second. The Lady Statesmen extended their lead to 5-0 with a pair of runs in the top of the seventh and held on for the win after the Lions scored twice in the bottom of the inning.

Lee had a two-RBI double to score Amy Goebel and Kendall Miller, but it would not be enough as DSU held on for the win. Sabrina Roberts (9-3) took the pitching loss after allowing 10 hits with a strikeout in seven innings on the mound.

In the second game, the Lions faced a 3-1 deficit before rallying to tie the game at 3-3 in the top of the seventh. A two-out single by Lindsey Greene scored Lee to give UNA new life. DSU, however, came through with a two-out hit of its own in the bottom of the inning to complete the sweep with the 4-3 win.

Greene finished the game 3-for-4 at the plate to lead the Lions.

UNA will return to Gulf South Conference action Wednesday with a trip to Huntsville to face East Division foe UAH. First pitch is scheduled for noon.
