LIONS DROP 5-2, 4-3 DOUBLE-HEADER TO LADY
STATESMEN
SOUTHAVEN, Miss.,
- The North Alabama softball team
committed five errors and was out-hit 21-11
during a pair of losses to Delta State
Sunday in Southaven, Miss. The Lions dropped
to 21-9 overall after falling 5-2 and 4-3 to
the Lady Statesmen.
In the first
game, Delta State pitcher Edie Oliver stuck
out six batters and took a shutout into the
seventh inning before picking up the 5-2 win
for the Lady Statesmen.
UNA had trouble
findings its offensive swing. Sarah
Whitlow’s single in the fourth inning was
the first hit for the Lions, who managed
only five hits for the game. Kim Lee was the
only UNA player with two hits after going
2-for-3 at the plate.
DSU took an
early 3-0 lead after scoring two runs in the
top of the first inning and one in the
second. The Lady Statesmen extended their
lead to 5-0 with a pair of runs in the top
of the seventh and held on for the win after
the Lions scored twice in the bottom of the
inning.
Lee had a
two-RBI double to score Amy Goebel and
Kendall Miller, but it would not be enough
as DSU held on for the win. Sabrina Roberts
(9-3) took the pitching loss after allowing
10 hits with a strikeout in seven innings on
the mound.
In the second
game, the Lions faced a 3-1 deficit before
rallying to tie the game at 3-3 in the top
of the seventh. A two-out single by Lindsey
Greene scored Lee to give UNA new life. DSU,
however, came through with a two-out hit of
its own in the bottom of the inning to
complete the sweep with the 4-3 win.
Greene finished
the game 3-for-4 at the plate to lead the
Lions.
UNA will return
to Gulf South Conference action Wednesday
with a trip to Huntsville to face East
Division foe UAH. First pitch is scheduled
for noon.
