MADISON
– After dropping a 3-1 decision in the first
game of a Gulf South Conference
double-header to 13th-ranked
Alabama-Huntsville, the University of North
Alabama softball team rebounded to earn a
split with a 3-0 win Wednesday afternoon in
Madison.
With the split,
the Lions improve to 22-10 overall with a
5-1 record in GSC play. UAH is now 30-9,
3-3.
In the first
game, UAH starting pitcher Sage Woodham
improved to 14-3 on the year after picking
up the 3-1 win. The sophomore threw seven
innings allowing four hits with a walk.
The lone run
came in the top of the fourth inning when an
RBI-single by Amy Goebel scored Lindsey
Greene from third base. The score cut the
UAH lead to 2-1, but the Chargers added
another run in the fifth and kept UNA off
the score board the rest of the way.
Sabrina Roberts
took the pitching loss for the Lions. She
fell to 9-4 on the year after allowing two
earned runs off seven hits with a strikeout.
UNA’s Stephanie
Glienke (8-3) pitched a complete-game
shutout to earn the win in the second game.
The senior from Houston, Texas, went seven
innings and gave up just two hits, with
three strikeouts during the 3-0 win.
At the plate,
Jessica Liddy and Maggie Eades each went
2-for-3 to lead the Lions, who got single
runs in the top of the fifth, sixth and
seventh innings to break a scoreless tie.
An RBI-single
by Emily Beckwith scored Andrea Palmer, who
led off the fifth inning with a hit up the
middle. In the sixth, it was a single by
Eades that scored Lindsey Bates from second
base. Bates also got an RBI in the seventh
inning with a single through the right side
to score Greene from third.
The Lions will
play at Albany State on Thursday in a
double-header beginning at 1 p.m. CST. The
following weekend, UNA will return to GSC
play with a pair of double-headers at
Valdosta State (Saturday at noon) and West
Florida (Sunday at noon).
