SOFTBALL TEAM DROPS GSC DOUBLE-HEADER TO
LADY BLAZERS
VALDOSTA, Ga.,
– In a battle of the top two teams in the
Gulf South Conference East Division, the
Valdosta State pitching staff shut down the
North Alabama bats Saturday in a pair of
shutout victories in Valdosta, Ga. UNA
managed only a single hit in each game,
falling 1-0 and 3-0, giving the fifth-ranked
Lady Blazers sole possession of first place
in the division.
The first game
featured a pitching duel between the Lions’
Stephanie Glienke (9-4) and VSU’s Kristen
Lindsey (12-1). Glienke continued her solid
play on the mound, allowing only two hits
with three strikeouts for the game.
Lindsey,
however, was better. She took a no-hitter
into the seventh inning before Lindsey Bates
reached base with a lead-off single. The VSU
hurler recovered and recorded three straight
strikeouts to end the game.
The Lady
Blazers got their lone run in the bottom of
the second inning.
The
manufactured run came after a single, stolen
base, sacrifice bunt and sacrifice fly.
In the second
contest, Lindsey Greene singled to lead off
the top of the first inning for the Lions.
It would prove, however, to be the only hit
of the game for UNA as Brianna Collis (10-0)
kept the Lions off the scoreboard for the
win.
VSU strung its
first three hits of the game together in the
third inning to score two runs. The Lady
Blazers added a solo home run by Kristina
Ely in the fourth to pick up the 3-0
victory.
Sabrina Roberts
took the loss on the mound for UNA. She gave
up three runs off four hits with a strikeout
in 3.2 innings of work to fall to 9-5 on the
year. Megan Niesel pitched the final 2.1
innings for the Lions. She allowed two hits
with three strikeouts.
The Lions will
continue their GSC road swing with a pair of
games at West Florida on Sunday. First pitch
is scheduled for noon with live stats for
both contests available at
