LIONS EARN SEASON SWEEP OVER TIGERS WITH
2-1, 7-6 VICTORIES
FLORENCE
– The University of North Alabama softball
team got a pair of extra-inning wins over
West Alabama Friday evening at Cox Creek
Park.
The Lions
improved to 26-12 overall with a 7-3 mark in
GSC play with the 2-1, 7-6 victories.
The two wins
give UNA the season sweep over the Tigers
after winning two in Livingston on March 18.
It also extends the Lions’ winning streak
over UWA to 15 straight games.
In the first
game, the Lions got two runs in the bottom
of the 10th inning to rally for a 2-1
victory.
Stephanie
Glienke pitched all 10 innings to get the
win. The senior from Houston, Texas took a
shutout into the top of the 10th before
international tie-breaker rules gave West
Alabama a runner on second base. The Tigers
used a sacrifice bunt and an RBI single to
score their lone run.
Glienke gave up
nine hits and had six strikeouts with a walk
to improve to 10-4 on the year. Lindsey
Bates went 2-for-3 at the plate to lead the
Lions.
West Alabama’s
Emily White also pitched a gem. She
scattered five hits in nine innings and also
worked a shutout until the tie-breaking
rules took effect. UNA scored its two runs
after Kendall Miller was placed on second
base to open the 10th inning.
Miller stole
third and scored on an RBI-double by Emily
Beckwith.
Beckwith then
scored on a sacrifice bunt by Kim Lee. The
bunt moved Beckwith to third and she scored
on a throwing error by the UWA catcher.
After taking a
6-1 lead after three innings, UNA had to
hold off a late West Alabama charge to win
the nightcap 7-6 in nine innings.
An RBI single
to center field by Maggie Eades scored Amy
Goebel in the bottom of the ninth to secure
the win. Goebel reached base on one of the
Tigers’ six fielding errors on the day.
The Lions
looked to be in control after three innings
of play. Two runs in the first inning and
four in the third put UNA in control early.
UWA, however, used a four-run fifth inning
and scored again in the top of the seventh
to tie the game at 6-6.
Sabrina Roberts
picked up the win on the mound after coming
on in relief of starter Megan Niesel. She
threw the game’s final four innings,
allowing only one hit with five strikeouts
to improve to 10-5 on the year.
At the plate,
Allie Pridmore went 2-for-3 to lead the
Lions. The freshman from Birmingham also
scored and drove in a run. Eades and Lindsey
Greene also had two hits each for UNA.
The Lions will
host West Georgia Saturday at noon in
another GSC double-header.
