UAH EDGES LIONS IN DOUBLE-HEADER SWEEP

SOFTBALL TEAM FALLS TO THIRD PLACE IN GSC EAST     

FLORENCE – After scoring first in both contests Saturday afternoon, the University of North Alabama softball team could not hold on to leads against Alabama-Huntsville, dropping a pair of one-run decisions to the visiting Chargers in Gulf South Conference play.

UAH overcame a 2-0 deficit to win the first game 3-2 before taking the second game 2-1 and leapfrog the Lions to take over second place in the GSC East Division. The two losses drops UNA’s overall record to 29-16 with a 10-7 mark in conference play. The Chargers are now 39-13, 12-7.

In the first game, UAH hurler Sage Woodham improved to 19-4 on the year after tossing a three-hit, complete-game victory.

The Lions got two of their three its in the bottom of the first inning.

After leading off the inning with a double, Lindsey Greene scored on an RBI-triple by Lindsey Bates. Bates then scored on a wild pitch to put UNA on top 2-0.

The Chargers quickly answered with two runs in the top of the second inning to tie the game at 2-2, then got the winning run on a sacrifice fly in the fifth.

Megan Niesel (8-4) took the loss on the mound after allowing seven hits, with two of the three runs earned. She also struck out one and recorded a walk.

In the second game, the Lions against scored quickly to take an early lead. After Amy Goebel reached base on a fielding error in the bottom of the second, she was later brought home on an RBI-single by Allie Pridmore.

UAH wasted little time regaining the lead. Stephanie Pinto hit a two-out, two-run home run in the top of the third inning to put the Chargers on top 2-1. Neither team scored the rest of the way.

Sabrina Roberts (11-7) scattered eight hits and struck out one in a losing effort for the Lions. Courtney Hudson (5-3) got the win after pitching a four-hitter. Lindsey Greene was the only UNA batter to get two hits on the day. She went 2-for-3 at the plate with a pair of singles.

The Lions will return to action on Monday with a double-header against Albany State. The double-header is set to begin at 3 p.m.
