LIONS IMPROVE TO 31-16 AFTER PAIR OF
SHUTOUTS
FLORENCE
– The University of North Alabama softball
team outscored Albany State 15-0 in two
games during a double-header sweep Monday
evening at Cox Creek Park. The Lions
improved to 31-16 after the 6-0, 9-0 wins,
marking the third straight year the team has
reached the 30-win plateau.
Lindsey Greene
led the way at the plate, going 5-for-7 with
a double and four singles on the day. The
senior from Decatur also scored five runs to
up her season total to a team-high 43 on the
year.
In the first
game, Stephanie Glienke struck out 11
batters, just missing her career high of 12,
to get the complete-game shutout. The senior
from Houston, Texas, improved to 11-5 on the
year after scattering four hits with only
one walk.
Offensively,
the Lions scored single runs in the bottom
of the second and third innings before
pushing two runs across the plate in fifth
and sixth stanzas. Lindsey Bates was 2-for-3
with an RBI, while Greene went 2-for-4 at
the plate.
UNA used an
eight-run first inning to set the tone early
in the second contest. The Lions sent 12
batters to the plate in the inning,
including Greene who singled twice and
scored two runs.
Overall, the
Lions had 13 hits in the second game. Greene
was a perfect 3-for-3 while Sarah Whitlow
and Amy Goebel added two hits each.
On the mound,
Megan Niesel improved to 9-4 after tossing a
one-hit shutout with six strikeouts.
UNA will return
to Gulf South Conference play on Friday with
a pair of makeup games against West Florida.
The early-season match-up between the two
teams was rained out in Pensacola, Fla. Game
time for the first contest is set for 5 p.m.
The Lions will
remain at home to face the Argonauts on
Saturday for two GSC games and will face
Valdosta State in a home double-header the
next day.
