GLIENKE, PRIDMORE HELP UNA WIN GAME TWO
FLORENCE
– The University of North Alabama softball
team rebounded from a 2-1 home loss to West
Florida Friday evening to post a one-run win
of its own and earn a split in Gulf South
Conference play.
The two games
against the Argonauts was the first of a
four-game series between the two teams, with
the third and fourth contests slated for
Saturday beginning at 1 p.m. The Lions now
own a 32-17 record with an 11-8 mark in
conference play. UNA needs to win just one
of its final four regular-season games to
qualify for next week’s GSC tournament in
Southaven, Miss.
In the first
game, West Florida pitcher Taren Walton
limited the Lions to one run off two hits to
get the victory on the mound. The Argonauts
(30-23, 10-10) got both their runs in the
bottom of the second inning, including an
unearned run following a Lion error.
Sabrina Roberts
(11-8) pitched well for UNA, but was stuck
with the loss after allowing seven hits and
striking out four in six innings of work.
Walton improved
to 15-8 after striking out seven in the
complete-game effort.
Lindsey Bates
led the Lions at the plate, going 2-for-3
with a double.
Allie Pridmore
proved to be the hero for UNA in the second
game. The freshman from Birmingham, drove in
the Lions’ only run during a 1-0 win.
After her
double to left centerfield brought home
Maggie Eades in the top of the fourth
inning, Pridmore helped save a possible run
in the bottom of the seventh with a diving
catch at second base.
The defensive
play helped save a solid pitching showing by
Stephine Glienke, who scattered two hits and
struck out nine to earn the complete-game
shutout. The win improved Glienke’s record
to 12-5 on the year.
Eades and
Jessica Liddy each went 2-for-3 in the
second game as the Lions out-hit the
Argonauts 7-2.
After
Saturday’s double-header against West
Florida, UNA will host fifth-ranked Valdosta
State Sunday in a GSC double-header
beginning at noon.
