FLORENCE – A pair of shutout victories over Arkansas Tech improved the University of North Alabama softball team’s record to 6-0 on the year, giving the team its best start in school history. Freshman Andrea Palmer hit two home runs and Lion pitchers Stephanie Glienke and Megan Niesel each threw two-hitters as UNA recorded a 3-0, 6-0 sweep Sunday afternoon at Cox Creek Park.

In The first game, Glienke improved to 2-0 on the year with her second shutout of the season. The senior from Houston, Texas, allowed just two hits and struck out four batters in seven innings of work.

Offensively, Jessica Liddy, Lindsey Bates and Maggi Eades each went
2-for-3 for the game. Palmer, a freshman from Waterloo, led off the bottom of the fifth inning with a solo home run, while Bates and Eades added RBI-hits in the sixth.

Palmer delivered for the Lions again in the second game. Her three-run home run in the bottom of the fourth inning broke a scoreless tie and set the stage for a 6-0 win. UNA added another run in the fourth before Palmer drove in another run with an RBI-single in the fifth. She finished the game 2-for-3 at the plate.  Niesel had five strikeouts in seven innings and also improved to 2-0 on the season.

The Lions will be in action next weekend at the West Georgia Wolves Invitational. UNA will play five games in Carrollton, Ga., including a match-up with No. 2 Florida Southern Friday morning at 9 a.m. On Friday, UNA will also face Augusta State (11 a.m.) and No. 23 Southern Indiana (5 p.m.).  The next day, the Lions will play fifth-ranked Southern Illinois-Edwardsville at 10 a.m., then face Lewis at noon.
