– A pair of shutout victories over Arkansas
Tech improved the University of North
Alabama softball team’s record to 6-0 on the
year, giving the team its best start in
school history. Freshman Andrea Palmer hit
two home runs and Lion pitchers Stephanie
Glienke and Megan Niesel each threw
two-hitters as UNA recorded a 3-0, 6-0 sweep
Sunday afternoon at Cox Creek Park.
In The first game, Glienke improved to 2-0
on the year with her second shutout of the
season. The senior from Houston, Texas,
allowed just two hits and struck out four
batters in seven innings of work.
Offensively, Jessica Liddy, Lindsey Bates
and Maggi Eades each went
2-for-3 for the game. Palmer, a freshman
from Waterloo, led off the bottom of the
fifth inning with a solo home run, while
Bates and Eades added RBI-hits in the sixth.
Palmer delivered for the Lions again in the
second game. Her three-run home run in the
bottom of the fourth inning broke a
scoreless tie and set the stage for a 6-0
win. UNA added another run in the fourth
before Palmer drove in another run with an
RBI-single in the fifth. She finished the
game 2-for-3 at the plate. Niesel had
five strikeouts in seven innings and also
improved to 2-0 on the season.
The Lions will be in action next weekend at
the West Georgia Wolves Invitational. UNA
will play five games in Carrollton, Ga.,
including a match-up with No. 2 Florida
Southern Friday morning at 9 a.m. On Friday,
UNA will also face Augusta State (11 a.m.)
and No. 23 Southern Indiana (5 p.m.).
The next day, the Lions will play
fifth-ranked Southern Illinois-Edwardsville
at 10 a.m., then face Lewis at noon.
