LIONS DROP PAIR TO WEST FLORIDA, WILL NEED TO WIN ONE AGAINST VALDOSTA STATE

FLORENCE – A pair of costly losses to West Florida has put the University of North Alabama softball team’s chances of qualifying for the Gulf South Conference tournament in jeopardy. The Lions dropped a 2-0, 5-3 home double-header to the Argonauts on Saturday to fall to fourth place in the East Division standings.

UNA is now 32-18 overall with an 11-9 mark in conference play. The Lions will need to win at least one game against fifth-ranked Valdosta State in the regular season finale on Sunday. The Blazers swept the Lions in late March and boast a 19-1 conference record.

Against West Florida, UNA struggled at the plate most of the day. In the first game, Argonaut pitcher Taren Walton (16-8) picked up her second win over the Lions in two days after scattering six hits in the complete-game shutout.

Lindsey Greene was the only UNA player able to find success at the plate, going 3-for-4 with three singles. Megan Niesel was stuck with the loss after UWF pushed across single runs in the top of the sixth and seventh innings. The loss dropped Niesel’s record to 9-5 on the year after she struck out four and allowed six hits in seven innings of work.

In the second game, the Argonauts built a 5-0 lead and held off a late UNA rally to secure the win. Facing the five-run deficit in the bottom of the seventh, the Lions got a bases-loaded walk by Sarah Whitlow, and a two-run single by Jessica Liddy to make the score 5-3.

UWF pitcher Emily Burge recovered, however, to record the final out and improve to 14-13 on the year. Sabrina Roberts (11-9) took the loss on the mound for UNA. She allowed five runs of six hits and struck out six.

At the plate, Whitlow was a perfect 3-for-3, while Liddy finish the game with a 2-for-4 showing.

Game time for Sunday’s double-header against Valdosta State is set for 1 p.m. Between the games, the Lions will honor their four seniors with a Senior Day presentation.
