SIUE, KNOCK OFF LEWIS
CARROLLTON, Ga., – After dropping
a close decision to the fifth-ranked team in
the country on Friday, the University of
North Alabama softball team rebounded with a
convincing mercy-rule win to go 1-1 on the
first day of the West Georgia Wolves
Invitational.
Pitcher Sabra McCune led the way for
fifth-ranked Southern Illinois-Edwardsville,
getting 12 strikeouts and scattering five
hits in the early game.
Lead-off hitter Lindsey Greene got two of
the Lions’ five hits with a pair of singles.
Junior Kim Lee provided the only run of the
game for UNA with a solo home run in the top
of the fifth inning.
SIUE got a two-run home run in the bottom of
the first inning and added an RBI-single in
the fifth.
Stephanie Glienke (2-1) was stuck with the
loss after allowing seven hits with a pair
of strikeouts in six innings of work.
The Lions wasted little time finding their
offense against Lewis in the second game.
UNA used a seven-run second inning en route
to an 8-0 victory over the Flyers.
Emily Beckwith and Sarah Whitlow each hit
home runs as the Lions sent 10 batters to
the plate in the inning. Beckwith’s two-run
shot represented the first runs of the game,
and also brought home Maggi Eades, who
reached base on an error.
After a two-RBI double by Greene, Whitlow
hit her second homer of the season with a
three-run shot to left field. Eades drove in
Jessica Liddy with a single to wrap up the
scoring in the second.
UNA was able to reach the eight-run
mercy-rule limit in the bottom of the third.
Allie Pridmore led off the inning with a
double and was brought home on a single by
Greene.
For the game, Greene, Whitlow, Pridmore and
Lindsey Bates each went 2-for-3 at the
plate.
The win gives the Lions a 7-1 record on the
year. The team is scheduled to face three
teams on Saturday, beginning with a showdown
against second-ranked Florida Southern at 9
a.m. UNA is also slated to face Augusta
State at 11 a.m. and No. 23 Southern Indiana
at 5 p.m.
