LIONS FALL TO NO. 5 SIUE, KNOCK OFF LEWIS

CARROLLTON, Ga.,
– After dropping a close decision to the fifth-ranked team in the country on Friday, the University of North Alabama softball team rebounded with a convincing mercy-rule win to go 1-1 on the first day of the West Georgia Wolves Invitational.

Pitcher Sabra McCune led the way for fifth-ranked Southern Illinois-Edwardsville, getting 12 strikeouts and scattering five hits in the early game.

Lead-off hitter Lindsey Greene got two of the Lions’ five hits with a pair of singles. Junior Kim Lee provided the only run of the game for UNA with a solo home run in the top of the fifth inning.

SIUE got a two-run home run in the bottom of the first inning and added an RBI-single in the fifth.

Stephanie Glienke (2-1) was stuck with the loss after allowing seven hits with a pair of strikeouts in six innings of work.

The Lions wasted little time finding their offense against Lewis in the second game. UNA used a seven-run second inning en route to an 8-0 victory over the Flyers.

Emily Beckwith and Sarah Whitlow each hit home runs as the Lions sent 10 batters to the plate in the inning. Beckwith’s two-run shot represented the first runs of the game, and also brought home Maggi Eades, who reached base on an error.

After a two-RBI double by Greene, Whitlow hit her second homer of the season with a three-run shot to left field. Eades drove in Jessica Liddy with a single to wrap up the scoring in the second.

UNA was able to reach the eight-run mercy-rule limit in the bottom of the third. Allie Pridmore led off the inning with a double and was brought home on a single by Greene.

For the game, Greene, Whitlow, Pridmore and Lindsey Bates each went 2-for-3 at the plate.

The win gives the Lions a 7-1 record on the year. The team is scheduled to face three teams on Saturday, beginning with a showdown against second-ranked Florida Southern at 9 a.m. UNA is also slated to face Augusta State at 11 a.m. and No. 23 Southern Indiana at 5 p.m.
