FLORENCE – The University of North Alabama softball team had three players earn All-Gulf South Conference honors following the 2008 regular season. Senior outfielders Lindsey Bates and Lindsey Greene received first-team nods, while junior pitcher Megan Niesel was selected to the second team.

All three of the players had received GSC East Division player-of-the-week honors as the Lions went 26-19 and made a return trip to the conference tournament following a one-year absence. UNA posted a 14-10 mark in GSC play and qualified as the fourth seed in the East Division.

Bates, a right fielder from Decatur, took home first-team honors for the second straight season. She led the team with a .385 batting average after starting all 45 games for the Lions in 2008. Her 32 RBI and .480 on- base percentage were also team highs.

Greene, a center fielder also from Decatur, capped off her career with her third straight first-team selection.

She received a second-team nod in 2005 and was the East Division Freshman of the Year. This season, she batted .369 and led the team in hits with 57 on the year. She also started all 45 games for UNA

Niesel takes home her first all-conference honor. The right-handed pitcher from Fort Lauderdale, Fla., led the Lions’ pitching staff with a 14-8 record. She topped the team in several categories, including most appearances (22), most innings pitched (151), most complete games (19) and lowest earned run average (1.44).
