FLORENCE
– The University of North Alabama softball
team had three players earn All-Gulf South
Conference honors following the 2008 regular
season. Senior outfielders Lindsey Bates and
Lindsey Greene received first-team nods,
while junior pitcher Megan Niesel was
selected to the second team.
All three of
the players had received GSC East Division
player-of-the-week honors as the Lions went
26-19 and made a return trip to the
conference tournament following a one-year
absence. UNA posted a 14-10 mark in GSC play
and qualified as the fourth seed in the East
Division.
Bates, a right
fielder from Decatur, took home first-team
honors for the second straight season. She
led the team with a .385 batting average
after starting all 45 games for the Lions in
2008. Her 32 RBI and .480 on- base
percentage were also team highs.
Greene, a
center fielder also from Decatur, capped off
her career with her third straight
first-team selection.
She received a
second-team nod in 2005 and was the East
Division Freshman of the Year. This season,
she batted .369 and led the team in hits
with 57 on the year. She also started all 45
games for UNA
Niesel takes
home her first all-conference honor. The
right-handed pitcher from Fort Lauderdale,
Fla., led the Lions’ pitching staff with a
14-8 record. She topped the team in several
categories, including most appearances (22),
most innings pitched (151), most complete
games (19) and lowest earned run average
(1.44).
