LIONS BEAT OUACHITA BAPTIST, FALL TO ARKANSAS TECH

MONTICELLO, Ark., – For the fourth time this season, the University of North Alabama softball team split a pair of games at a pre-conference tournament, this time, defeating Ouachita Baptist 5-2 before falling to Arkansas Tech 4-3 at the UAM Classic in Monticello, Ark.

The split gives the Lions a 6-5 record on the season, with a 1-1 mark in South Region contests. UNA will play host Arkansas-Monticello Saturday at noon, before facing Division I Arkansas-Pine Bluff at 4 p.m.

Against OBU, Allie Peterson led the way with a 3-for-4 showing at the plate. The freshman from New Market, Ala., singled her first three at-bats, scoring and driving in a run along the way.

UNA scored a run in the top of the second inning and two in the third to take a 3-0 lead before the Tigers (6-7) answered. Two runs in the bottom of the third cut the lead to 3-2 before the Lions extended their lead with two in the fourth.

Lindsey Greene led off the inning with a double, and came home on an RBI-single by Peterson. Lindsey Bates later scored from third on a passed ball to make the final score 5-2. Sabrina Roberts improved to 2-1 on the year with the pitching victory. She surrendered nine hits with a pair of strikeouts in the complete-game effort.

Against ATU, the Lions found little offense, getting just three hits and committing two errors in the 4-3 loss. The Golden Suns (11-4) took a 4-0 lead into the top of the seventh inning before a late UNA rally made the game interesting.

After back-to-back walks by Sarah Whitlow and Bates, Andrea Palmer connected on a three-run home run to right center. The blast cut the lead to 4-3, but the next three batters got out, ending any chance at a comeback.

Peterson was the only UNA player to record more than one hit, going 2-for-3 for the game, which wrapped a 5-for-7 performance on the day. Anna Ard (1-3) suffered the loss on the mound after giving up four hits with two strikeouts in 3.2 innings of work.
