FLORENCE
– The North Alabama softball team was
unable to overcome nine errors in two games
during a double-header sweep by Florida
Southern Thursday at the UNA Softball
Complex. The Lions had five miscues during a
5-1 loss in game one, and followed it up
with a four-error showing to fall 6-3 in the
second game.
UNA (9-8) will
play two games against Saint Leo at 4 p.m.
Saturday to wrap up play at the 2008 South
Region Crossover. SLU split with No. 1
Alabama-Huntsville in the early
double-header on Thursday. Florida Southern
will meet UAH Saturday at noon.
In the first
game, Florida Southern scored single runs in
the first three innings to take a 3-0 lead.
After the Mocs pushed two runs across in the
top of the sixth inning for a commanding
five-run lead, UNA was unable to mount a
comeback.
Three straight
singles loaded the bases for the Lions in
the bottom of the sixth before FSC pitcher
Brittany Minton retired the next three to
end the threat. UNA broke up the shutout in
the bottom of the seventh when Jennifer
Sharp singled and later scored on a
groundout by Kim Lee.
Allie Peterson
went 2-for-3 to lead the Lions at the plate.
Megan Niesel (5-2) took the loss on the
mound for UNA while Minton improved to 7-1
for the Mocs.
In the second
contest, Florida Southern jumped out to a
5-0 lead after scoring two runs in the first
inning and three in the third. The Lions
were able to briefly cut into the lead in
the bottom of the third when Lee and Lindsey
Greene scored on an FSC error to make the
score 5-2. Each team added a run in the
fifth inning to make the final tally 6-3.
Kendall Moore
went 2-for-2 with a run scored in the second
