VALDOSTA, Ga.,
– The University of North Alabama softball
team opened conference play Saturday with a
pair of road losses at Valdosta State. The
Lions dropped the first game of the
double-header 4-2 before falling 8-6 in the
late contest.
In the first
game, UNA took a 1-0 lead in the top of the
first inning on an RBI-single by Lindey
Bates. The Blazers, however, scored the next
four runs to take a 4-1 lead. The Lions
added another run in the top of the seventh
on a solo home run by Jennifer Sharp. It was
the first career homer for the freshman from
New Market, Ala.
Bates and
Maggie Eades each went 2-for-3 at the plate
while Megan Niesel (5-3) took the loss on
the mound after giving up six hits with a
strikeout in six innings of work.
In the second
game, UNA entered the top of the seventh
inning trailing 6-1 before mounting a
comeback. The Lions sent nine batters to the
plate and scored five runs in the inning
that was highlighted by a three-run home run
by Eades.
After tying the
score at 5-5, however, the rally came to an
end in the bottom of the inning when Alex
Acosta hit a two-run walk-off home run for
VSU.
Eades finished
the game 2-for-4 with three RBI, while Sarah
Whitlow, Ally Pridmore and Kim Lee added two
hits each for the Lions. Anna Ard (1-5) took
the loss on the mound for UNA after pitching
the seventh inning.
The two losses
drops the Lions’ overall record to 9-10 with
an 0-2 mark in GSC play. VSU improves to
25-5, 2-0. UNA will continue its GSC road
swing at West Florida with a double-header
beginning at 1 p.m.
