PENSACOLA, Fla.,
– The University of North Alabama softball
team dominated the first game and rallied to
win the second during a 7-0, 2-1 sweep over
Pittsburg State Monday in Pensacola, Fla.
The two victories, along with a 7-0 win over
West Florida in the second game of a
double-header on Sunday, gives the Lions a
three-game winning streak and a 12-11 record
on the season.
Lindsey Bates
went 5-for-7 on the day against Pitt State.
In the first game, the senior from Decatur
went 2-for-4 and drove in a pair or runs as
UNA did all its scoring in the top of the
first and fifth innings.
After scoring
twice in the first, the Lions sent 10
batters to the plate during a five-run fifth
to take a commanding 7-0 lead. Sarah Whitlow
and Maggie Eades also each went 2-for-4 for
the game.
Megan Niesel
improved to 6-4 on the mound with the
complete-game shutout. She took a no-hitter
into the fifth inning and scattered four
hits for the game. She also struck out five
batters while allowing only a single walk.
In the second
game, UNA found itself trailing for the
first time on the day when PSU took a 1-0
lead in the top of the fourth inning. The
lead, however, would not last long as the
Lions scored twice in the bottom of the
inning and held on to make the final score
2-1.
Sabrina Roberts
(4-2) went the distance on the mound, giving
up the lone run off seven hits. Bates
continued her hot streak with a 3-for-3
showing at the plate.
