FLORENCE
– Sarah Whitlow’s RBI-single in the
bottom of the seventh inning scored Kim Lee
from second base to give North Alabama a 2-1
win over West Georgia and secure the
two-game sweep Saturday in Gulf South
Conference softball action. The Lions took
the first game 1-0 and now own sole
possession of fourth place in the East
Division with a 4-4 league record.
UNA had to
rally to win the second game after West
Georgia’s Kara Pollock hit a two-out solo
home run in the top of the first inning.
Starting pitcher Sabrina Roberts (5-3)
recovered to scatter two hits with three
strikeouts over the final six innings to
earn the win on the mound for UNA.
The Lions got
on the scoreboard in the bottom of the third
when Kendall Moore hit a lead-off double and
later scored on an RBI-single by Lindsey
Greene. In the seventh, Lee singled and
stole second to set up Whitlow’s
game-winning hit.
Seven different
players recorded single hits in the second
game for UNA.
In the first
game, the Lions got an RBI-single by Lindsey
Bates in the bottom of the third inning to
represent the game’s only run. Each team was
held to four hits, but UNA took advantage of
its best opportunity when Moore led off the
inning with a double, then reached third
base on a passed ball.
It took a
two-out hit by Bates to score the run and
give the Lions a 1-0 lead.
That would
prove to be all the needed offense as Megan
Niesel recorded the complete-game shutout.
The junior from Ford Lauderdale, Fla., threw
seven scoreless innings with one walk and
eight strikeouts to improve to 9-4 on the
year.
The Lions will
host another GSC East Division opponent on
Sunday when West Alabama comes to town.
First pitch is set for 2 p.m. at the UNA
Softball Complex.
