FLORENCE
– After dropping a 2-1 last-at-bat decision
to West Florida, North Alabama rebounded to
take the second game 4-1 and earn a split
with the Argonauts at home Saturday evening
in Gulf South Conference softball action.
The two teams have now split their four-game
season series and remain tied for third
place in the GSC East Division with
identical 7-5 league records.
Sabrina Roberts
got the win on the mound for the Lions in
the nightcap. The senior from Decatur
scattered five hits over seven innings with
the only earned run coming in the top of the
seventh inning. She also picked up five
strikeouts along the way to improve to 7-3
on the season.
UNA (19-14)
took a quick 3-0 lead after scoring a single
run in the bottom of the first inning and
two in the second. Kim Lee highlighted the
second stanza with a two-run,
inside-the-park home run. The Lions extended
their lead to 4-0 in the fifth inning on a
sacrifice fly by Sarah Whitlow that scored
Lee from third base. Lee and Lindsey Greene
each finished the game 2-for-3 at the plate.
In the first
game, West Florida (27-16) scored the
go-ahead run on a squeeze bunt by Whitney
Gay in the top of the seventh. The play
scored Melissa Chastang from third base and
proved to be the winning run when the Lions
left the tying run on third base in the
bottom of the inning.
UNA was held to
five hits in the contest with Maggie Eades
driving in the lone run with a double in the
third inning. Megan Niesel (10-5) took the
loss on the mound after giving up eight hits
with two strikeouts in seven innings of
work.
The Lions will
host East Division-leading Valdosta State
Sunday with a double-header beginning at 1
p.m.
