SOFTBALL TEAM SPLITS WITH 12TH-RANKED BLAZERS

Return to UNA Softball Homepage >>>

FLORENCE – Lindsey Greene went 7-for-8 on the day as the University of North Alabama softball team split a home double-header with 12th-ranked Valdosta State Sunday afternoon. The split keeps the Lions (20-15 overall, 8-6 GSC) in a tie for third place in the Gulf South Conference East Division with West Florida.

UNA rallied to earn a last-at-bat victory in the first game. Jennifer Sharp’s seventh-inning single scored Greene from third base for the winning run. The game-winning hit capped a rally that saw the Lions overcome a 4-1 deficit after Valdosta State hit a pair of two-run homers in the top of the fourth and fifth innings.

The Lions used a three-run fifth inning to tie the score. After consecutive singles by Kendall Moore and Kim Lee, a double by Greene drove both home. Greene later scored on a ground out by Lindsey Bates to knot the game at 4-4.

Greene led off the seventh with another double before reaching third base on a sacrifice bunt by Sarah Whitlow. She came home on Sharp’s hit through the left side to give UNA its sixth straight victory.

Megan Niesel scattered seven hits and struck out four batters to pick up the win on the mound. The complete-game win upped her record to 11-5 on the season.

Greene finished the game with a perfect 4-for-4 showing at the plate while Sharp was 3-for-4 with an RBI.

In the second game, UNA was never able to recover after the Blazers jumped out to a 7-0 lead. VSU scored two runs in the top of the first, three in the third and two in the fifth to take a seven-run lead. The Lions managed to avoid the shutout by scored three in the bottom of the fifth, but it would not be enough.

Whitlow and Greene each went 3-for-4 to account for six of the Lions’ 11 hits in the second game. Sabrina Roberts took the loss on the mound after pitching the first three innings. She allowed five runs off nine hits to fall to 7-4 on the year.

UNA will now turn its attention to the GSC Crossover, April 10-13 at Wilson Morgan Park in Decatur. The Lions are scheduled to play each of the seven teams in the league’s West Division, with each game counting in the conference standings. UNA will open play at the Crossover on Friday against Delta State, with the first pitched scheduled for 6 p.m.
