LIONS SHUTOUT CHRISTIAN BROTHERS, SOUTHERN
ARKANSAS
DECATUR
– The North Alabama softball team outscored
its opponents 13-0 Saturday at the Gulf
South Conference Crossover, getting wins
over Christian Brothers and Southern
Arkansas at Decatur’s Wilson Morgan Park.
The pair of shutouts gives the Lions a 22-16
overall record with a 10-7 mark in GSC play.
In the first
game, UNA pitcher Sabrina Roberts made quick
work of the Lady Bucs, scattering three hits
with five strikeouts to pick up a 2-0 win.
The complete-game shutout that took just one
hour and 12 minutes to play, improved the
senior’s record to 8-4 on the year.
Lindsey Greene
went 2-for-4 at the plate and Sarah Whitlow
scored both runs for the Lions. After
leading off the third inning with a double,
Whitlow later scored from third base on a
wild pitch to give UNA a 1-0 lead.
In the fifth,
Whitlow led off the inning with a walk
before stealing second base. She scored on
an RBI-single by Jennifer Sharp, providing
all the offense the Lions would need.
In the second
game, UNA’s 11 runs and 13 hits were both
season highs. While the offense was in high
gear, pitcher Megan Niesel recorded her
third career no-hitter for the Lions.
UNA used a
six-run third inning to take control en
route to its first mercy-rule win of the
year. Already leading 5-0 entering the
inning, the Lions sent 12 batters to the
plate and got seven hits in the stanza.
Niesel (12-6)
faced 17 batters in five innings of work.
She struck out four and had two walks
without allowing a hit. At the plate, 10 UNA
players got at least one hit, led by
Greene’s 3-for-4 showing. Krystal Elliott
was also 2-for-2 with an RBI and a run
scored while Sharp drove in three runs for
the game.
The Lions will
close out play at the Crossover with two
games on Sunday. UNA will face
Arkansas-Monticello and Arkansas Tech
beginning at 10 a.m.
